A bit of background: it is said that it was named for the color of soil, using the Persian word khaki, meaning “dust.” It was first adopted by the British military in the 1800s for clothing to provide some sort of camouflage in the tropics. It became increasingly adopted in many military units around the world, and was the key colour of uniforms in the 2 world wars, and remains the choice for tropical military attire up to the present day.
